John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, US, has broken ground on a $1.5bn project to expand and revamp Terminal 4.
The privately funded project will see the addition of ten new gates at T4 and expand its check-in and arrival areas.

A revised agreement was recently signed between the Port Authority of New York, New Jersey and Delta Air Lines, JFK International Air Terminal (JFKIAT), the T4 operator.
This was aimed at expanding the facility and consolidating Delta operations at this place in 2023.
At present, Delta operates out of both T4 and T2.
Additionally, the project scope includes new retail and concessions options, a new self-service bag check, as well as upgraded ticketing and gate areas.

The project is expected to create more than 1,500 employment opportunities, which includes over 1,000 union construction jobs.
New York State Governor Hochul said: “Today’s groundbreaking is a huge part in the story of New York’s comeback from the hardship we underwent during the pandemic.
“The economic impact of this transformation will be felt for decades while solidifying our state’s global leading role in welcoming visitors from abroad and those returning home. I look forward to all this partnership with the Port Authority and Delta will bring to New York.”
Delta CEO Ed Bastian added: “We’re looking forward to delivering a world-class airport that will exceed expectations for years to come.

The project initially secured the nod of the Port Authority Board in February 2020, but the plan was revised owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Earlier this week, JFK Airport said that it eyes groundbreaking on its new $9.5bn international terminal next year.
