It will take off the load from the present Rajkot Airport, which is facing ‘considerable capacity restraints’ as a result of surrounding residential and commercial buildings.

The airport’s current air strip cannot serve aircraft bigger than Airbus 320 family/Boeing 737-800.

The new greenfield airport will feature modern facilities, increased number of counters, and other facilities for travellers.

The airport’s 23,000m² terminal building will have the capacity to manage 1,280 passengers during peak hours.

It will include amenities such as four passenger boarding bridges, three conveyor belts, 20 check-in counters, as well as modern firefighting and fire alarm system, while showcasing various artforms.

The runway length is planned for 3,040m and will serve B777-300ER/B747-400 airplanes, with the capacity to park 14 aircraft at a time.

Over 55% of earth work and 48% of runway and other pavement works have been finished.

In addition, the work for terminal building and ATC tower has been granted and mobilisation has commenced, marking the total project’s current progress at 27%.

Rajkot Greenfield International Airport is expected to start operations by March 2023.

AAI said that this airport will bolster the region’s industrial growth, in turn providing new employment opportunities.

It is also said to minimise time and cost related to logistics for several industries in the region.

In February 2020, AAI awarded a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) to Dilip Buildcon for the construction of this new greenfield airport in Gujarat.
