Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Qatar is set to install a runway debris monitoring system (RDMS) in an effort to increase safety measures across its runways.
As part of the plan, the airport awarded Bayanat Engineering Qatar a contract to deploy Xsight Systems’ RunWize Foreign Object & Debris (FOD) detection system.

This solution will offer real-time, automated FOD detection, location, identification and classification to harmonise the airport’s eco-system with other critical interfaces at the facility.
It will ensure full runway coverage and ascription capabilities for enhanced runway safety and operational efficiency during take-off and landing by using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based image and radar processing algorithms.
RunWize will be implemented on the airport’s two parallel runways, one of them claimed to be the longest in the world at 4,850 meters in length.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, another Middle Eastern country Jordan announced plans to open its international airport next month.
Queen Alia International Airport in Amman is expected to resume international flights in the first or second week of August.
Initially, the airport will accept flights from low-risk countries such as Germany, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Thailand, where the Covid-19 cases are relatively low.
