Spain’s Palma de Mallorca Airport has awarded a contract to Siemens Logistics to upgrade and optimise its baggage handling system.

Under the contract, Siemens Logistics will aid the airport operator Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (Aena) in adhering to international baggage screening specifications.

The company will integrate the new screening units and install six of its tilt-tray sorter units (VarioSort TTS), 60 check-ins counters and 79 baggage carousels.

The VarioSort tilt-tray sorter (TTS) features a reliable design.

Work will be carried out in phases to ensure that airport operations are not disturbed. Siemens expects the work to be completed in five years.

Siemens Logistics serves 16 passenger airports across the globe, which process a combined total of 1.1 billion annual airline customers.

In August, Aena contracted thyssenkrupp Elevator to install and maintain passenger boarding bridges (PBBs) and moving walks in three airports.

This new infrastructure was fitted at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.

In May last year, a joint venture (JV) between Louis Berger and Spain-based Cemosa secured a €14m ($17.3m) contract from Aena to provide project management services for the expansion of Palma de Mallorca International Airport.

Aena operates 46 airports and two heliports in Spain and also holds direct and indirect shares in 17 other airports.
