Italian technology company Leonardo has secured a contract to install a baggage handling system at Hong Kong International Airport.
The multi-sorting baggage handling system (MBHS) will be installed in Terminal 1 at the airport as part of its ‘Primary Sorter Replacement’ programme.

Leonardo’s advanced baggage handling technology will replace the existing sets of legacy tilt-tray primary sorters and all associated hardware and software.
Leonardo will deliver four MBHS cross-belt sorters, 18 induction units and 14 barcode reading stations with radio-frequency identification (RFID) capabilities.
The company will also be responsible for the overall project management and will design, manufacture, supply, deliver, install, test and commission the new cross-belt primary sorters and all associated hardware and software.
Leonardo will also integrate the new cross-belt sorting technology with existing airport IT systems.

By GlobalDataUpon installation, the system will be able to provide variable speed control for optimising baggage throughput and the ability to dynamically re-centre the position of baggage on the sorter.
It will also provide controlled loading and unloading trajectories and the ability to handle all types of baggage including ‘out of gauge’ (oversized or bulky) items.
Air transportation consultancy firm BNP Associates certified and approved the MBHS cross-belt sorter.
Hong Kong Airport, which welcomed more than 74.7 million passengers last year, expects that the new baggage handling system will continue to meet the exacting standards of the airport in the future.
In December last year, a Leonardo and Siemens partnership secured a baggage handling systems maintenance contract worth €96m for Italy’s Rome Fiumicino Intercontinental Airport and Rome Ciampino International Airport.
