The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and Southwest Airlines have unveiled a renovated Terminal 1 at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The 13-gate terminal underwent a nearly $516.7m modernisation. It features a new check-in area equipped with new self-service ticket kiosks and a nine-lane security checkpoint. Other features include a new area for baggage claim, and dining and retail destinations.

It also features a fully automated checked-baggage inspection and sortation system, renovated arrival/baggage claim area, as well as updated and expanded restrooms, and replaced customer boarding bridges.

Southwest Airlines and LAWA collaborated with European commercial real estate company Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield to provide a new travel, dining and retail experience to travellers.

“The work happening to modernise LAX is focused on making our airport a more convenient and inviting place to travel through for Angelenos and visitors.”

The Terminal 1 renovation is part of an overall Los Angeles International Airport modernisation programme that includes an automated people mover likely to be completed by 2023.

The renovation created almost 3,475 construction jobs and completely refreshed the ageing terminal, which was initially constructed in the early 1980s.
