The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal to construct a new terminal and other allied facilities at Patna Airport in the Indian state of Bihar.

The proposed project will entail an investment of Rs12.17bn ($175m). Construction is expected to commence next month.

Patna Airport director Rajender Singh Lahauria told timesofindia.indiatimes.com: “The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will award the work to the selected company after conducting a survey within a week. We have already started shifting the airport colony residents as the allied structures are also to be reconstructed.”

Nagarjuna Construction Company will serve as the construction contractor for the new two-storey terminal building and other allied facilities.

The building has been designed by Manhunt Enterprises, which is based in Singapore.

Upon becoming operational, the new terminal will increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity to 4.5 million passengers per annum (MPPA) from existing 0.7 MPPA. The existing terminal building of the airport is operating at four times its capacity.

The building will cover an area of 65,155m², including a basement area of 18,650m² and will be equipped with world-class passenger facilities.

It will feature six aerobridges and an apron area that will offer sufficient room to park 14 aircraft simultaneously compared to the existing parking capacity for four aircraft.

The government believes that the construction of new terminal building will create additional jobs while also supporting increase in economic activities in the Patna region.

The project is a part of the ‘Package for Bihar’, announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
