London Heathrow Airport has concluded the first stage of its search for innovation partners ahead of the North-West runway expansion development.

The airport, which received backing from the UK Parliament last month for the construction of a third runway, launched a programme in April to find suitable partners for the airport expansion.

More than 100 potential innovation partners have expressed their interest and will compete for the opportunity to help execute the airport expansion project.

The innovation partners are willing to share ideas on sustainability, building design, service innovation, cost efficiencies and commercial concepts.

“The response to our call for expressions of interest has been extremely positive and I am really excited to move to the next stage, where we will compile a long list form all the great ideas put forward.”

Heathrow expansion executive director Emma Gilthorpe said: “Following an overwhelming majority of cross-party MPs showing their support for Heathrow expansion, the team is focused on delivering our commitments and ensuring the project is implemented in the most responsible way.

“This includes making sure we have the best technology and delivery methods available to us when building the new runway and associated infrastructure.

The final list of selected innovation partners will be announced next month, following which the remaining potential innovation partners will be asked to submit a business case and implementation plan demonstrating the feasibility of their idea.

Gilthorpe added: “Now we have had the stamp of approval from Government for our North-West runway scheme we can press ahead with finalising the scheme.”

The final public consultation on a preferred masterplan is planned to be launched early next year ahead of preparing the development consent order submission in 2020.

The expansion of Heathrow Airport will create approximately 40,000 local jobs.

In June, EasyJet suggested that a third runway at Heathrow could lead to a drop in fare prices.
