Beumer Group has installed the baggage handling system (BHS) at Sheremetyevo Airport to link North and South Terminal Complex operations in time for the first arrivals for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.

The company installed the system as part of the Sheremetyevo Tunnel Project. The 2km tunnels were built directly under the airfield and are said to be the first to be constructed under existing runways.

Sheremetyevo Airport deputy of general director Andrey Nikulin said: “Our goal is to ensure the implementation of the strategy of the national carrier, Aeroflot, to create favourable conditions for the development of our other aviation partners and, as a result, to become one of the largest passenger and cargo hubs in the world.

“The new BHS is capable of transporting more than 900 bags per hour in each direction allowing Sheremetyevo Airport to deliver fast connection times.”

“Today we are building new infrastructure facilities that will be launched for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. This allows us to meet the guests and participants of the Championships at the highest level, since their acquaintance with Russia will start from Sheremetyevo.”

One tunnel carries passengers while the other features Beumer’s autover independent carrier system (ICS) that transports baggage at speeds of up to 30km/h.

The system, with a total length of more than 4.8km, features 187 autoca intelligent destination coded vehicles (DCVs). Each vehicle carries one piece of baggage, making every bag completely traceable.
