The Sharjah International Airport Authority (SIAA) is to invest a total of AED1.5bn ($408.8m) to expand various facilities, including construction of a new passenger terminal building at the Sharjah International Airport (SIA).

The expansion will be executed in several phases and features a number of projects.

Under the expansion project, a terminal building will be built over the next four years. It will help the airport increase the passengers handling capacity to 20 million by 2027.

Sharjah International Airport Authority chairman Ali Salem Al Midfa said that the expansion of SIA is set to boost the number of passengers visiting the emirate and also improve existing travel options.

Al Midfa added that the strategic importance of the airport has further grown in recent years because of its growing passenger traffic, the location on main navigation and trading routes, as well as services and facilities offered by it in Sharjah and throughout the UAE.

“It will help the airport increase the passengers handling capacity to 20 million by 2027.”

As part of the future growth plan of the airport, SIA awarded a contract to Parsons Overseas to manage the new airport expansion project with a value of AED58m ($15.8m).

Additionally, Gama Aviation Services secured two contracts.

The company will build and operate a new private terminal at SIA with an investment of more than AED110m ($30m). Under the second agreement, it will be responsible for the operation of ground handling services for private aircraft and business aviation at the airport.

Furthermore, a new bridge is being constructed at the airport that will ease the traffic congestion and support the arriving travellers and customers.

Nearly 85% of the bridge was completed by the end of last year, and will become fully operational soon.
