The UK’s London Gatwick Airport has set out a series of objectives to help support the government’s future aviation strategy.

The new aviation strategy will set the framework for the future and enable the airport to improve connectivity across the UK and take advantage of opportunities following Britain’s exit from the European Union (EU).

London Gatwick is fully committed to playing a positive role in the consultation process of the new strategy that builds on the airport’s rising long-haul traffic and increased cargo handling.

Gatwick Airport chief executive officer Stewart Wingate said: “It is essential that our current operations and our future growth are supported and enhanced by the aviation strategy.

“Our submission repeats our pledge to deliver a privately financed second runway in a sustainable way.”

The proposal submitted by the airport involves four major areas, which are growth, competition, sustainable development and Brexit.

The submission is in line with the UK Government’s plan to make the best use of existing airport facilities, in addition to setting out the need to address sustainable growth challenges and resilience of airport operations in the congested airspace around London.
