This partnership builds on their recent collaboration to enhance digital travel credentials and biometric solutions in border management.

The latest partnership will integrate IDEMIA’s computer vision expertise with SITA’s baggage processing skills to enhance baggage handling efficiency and the overall airport experience.

This technology aims to minimise the risk of lost or delayed luggage, addressing passengers’ growing demand for better visibility and control over their baggage.

Automation in airports is on the rise, with 85% implementing self-bag drop technology and 32% of passengers using mobile phones for baggage updates, according to SITA.

The use of computer vision in baggage handling by SITA and IDEMIA is expected to further reduce human error in baggage delivery.

IDEMIA Travel & Transport and Sales head and senior vice-president Gaurav Gupta said: “With our shared mission to enhance the overall baggage handling experience for the air transport industry and for the passenger, IDEMIA is proud to partner with SITA.”

A key challenge in the industry is ensuring interoperability and security among different stakeholders without complex integrations.

The partnership between SITA and IDEMIA addresses this issue, building on the success of SITA’s WorldTracer, which has already reduced lost baggage by 77%.

SITA Baggage portfolio director Nicole Hogg said: “The air transport industry is facing unprecedented challenges as passenger numbers continue to surge, with global traffic expected to double by 2040.

“Airports and airlines are struggling to keep pace with this growth, particularly when it comes to baggage handling.”

Last month, Taipei Taoyuan International Airport partnered with SITA to revamp its passenger processing system, introducing SITA’s check-in kiosks to improve the passenger experience.
