UAE’s Abu Dhabi International Airport has opened a new transfer passenger screening facility at Terminal 3.

The move is part of the airport’s continued capacity enhancement programme, which was launched in 2010.

The programme is currently improving the airport’s passenger handling capability and will increase the throughput potential of the airport from the current 16 million to over 18 million passengers a year.

The new facility includes 16 new X-ray machines to improve passenger processing and movement from the arrival areas to the duty free and other departure facilities at the airport.

Abu Dhabi Airports chief operations officer Ahmad Al Haddabi said: "The capacity enhancement programme at our existing terminals is progressing well, and cements our commitment to offering our passengers a world class travelling experience while construction of the new midfield terminal complex continues at a rapid rate.

As a result of the new facility, the airport is capable of processing transfer traffic into two separate screening facilities, which is expected to reduce congestion at these facilities during peak traffic times.

Earlier this year, Abu Dhabi International Airport erected the first steel arch of the MTB, a move that marks the launch of the roof structure sequence of the mega gateway.

Slated to open in 2017, the new terminal building will have an area of 700,000m², an annual passenger capacity of 30 million travellers and will be able to accommodate up to 65 aircraft, including the Airbus A-380.
