US-based Denver International Airport (DIA) has announced that its fourth solar array is now operational, increasing its total generating capacity to 10MW.
The Solar IV array is located on the north side of the airport and can produce roughly 2MW of solar electricity a year.

Expected to reduce the greenhouse-gas emissions by an estimated 2,200t a year, the array can generate enough electricity to power approximately 500 homes.
Denver International Airport CEO Kim Day said: "DIA was designed to maximise sustainability and we have embraced and expanded that legacy over the last 19 years.
"We continue to invest in initiatives that reduce our carbon footprint and preserve the natural assets of Colorado. The most significant is our investment in green initiatives that are financially viable, which assures their perpetuity, even in times of economic downturn."
The Solar IV project was developed by the Oak Leaf Energy Partners and involved a $6m investment, which will be paid for by Denver Solar IV.

By GlobalDataThe electricity generated from the array will power the Denver Fire Department’s aircraft rescue and fire fighting training academy, an 80ft aircraft live-fire training simulator, as well as two regional aircraft for training in emergency scenarios.
The airport currently has 55 acres of solar fields comprising a total of 42,358 individual panels, representing the second-largest solar array at any US airport.
