Defence and security company Saab has signed an agreement with Swedish air navigation service provider (ANSP) LFV to build a new company, named Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions.
The new company will develop, commercialise, sell and operate products and services for remote air traffic control.

Saab Business Area Surveillance head Micael Johansson said: "The new company will bring together Saab’s world-leading technological know-how and global organisation with LFV’s unique expertise in delivering innovative, digital and certified operational solutions within air traffic control.
"This will allow the company to serve as a leading partner to guide customers through the entire process for the successful conversion to digital air traffic services."
The highly technological systems, with digital and integrated traffic control, will help transmit information from sensors to the air traffic control centre, irrespective of their locations.
The new system will offer enhanced flexibility and safety for passengers, while significantly reducing costs for air traffic control.

By GlobalDataUnder the terms of the agreement, Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions will be majority-owned by SAAB, holding 59% of its shares, while LFV will own 41% of the company’s shares.
LFV director general Olle Sundin said: "This will strengthen our ability to lead, develop and drive the digitalisation of air traffic management across the sector.
"Together we can both address and drive a digital transformation and the demands of the market."
Through this partnership, Saab and LFV have initiated the world’s first system for a remote-controlled, digital air traffic control remote tower.
On 21 April 2015, Sweden’s Örnsköldsvik Airport became the first airport worldwide to be remotely controlled through the LFV Remote Tower Centre in Sundsvall.
The new company is not expected to begin operations before 1 September.
