In combination with the Flight Stream Bluetooth wireless gateway, the GDL 84 is said to provide pilots with advanced traffic and weather information within Garmin Pilot on a mobile device.

The new offering also provides a rule-compliant ADS-B Out solution for airliners operating below 18,000ft, and its dual-link capability allows it to accumulate data on 978MHz UAT and 1,090MHz frequency bands.

"We’ve made the decision simple and beneficial for pilots who are looking for a cost-effective way to meet the requirements of ADS-B Out."

Garmin International aviation sales and marketing vice-president Carl Wolf said: "We’ve made the decision simple and beneficial for pilots who are looking for a cost-effective way to meet the requirements of ADS-B Out, while receiving the benefits of ADS-B In, which does not require a significant avionics installation.

"Backed by our portfolio of ADS-B solutions, Garmin offers comprehensive options for each segment of general aviation."

The GDL 84 features a built-in WAAS GPS receiver, and it allows wireless transmission of weather and traffic information to a mobile device through Flight Stream 110/210.

With Garmin’s self-interrogation feature, the GDL 84 will be able to communicate and interface with various general aviation transponders to synchronise squawk code and ident.

The technology also facilitates the ADS-B Out source to broadcast the same code as the transponder.

The GDL 84 is expected to receive FAA approved model list supplemental type certification in the first quarter of 2015.
