Intel has signed a definitive agreement to buy German-based drone auto-pilot software and algorithms solution provider Ascending Technologies for an undisclosed amount.
Ascending Technologies develops autopilot systems, unmanned aircraft systems and multi-rotor technology for professional, civil and research unmanned aerial vehicles (UAS) applications.

The deal is subject to customary closing conditions.
With the acquisition, Intel expects to develop smarter and more connected drones using the company’s computing, communications, sensor and cloud technology solutions.
Following the acquisition, Ascending Technologies, which includes its partners and customers, will be integrated with Intel.
In addition, Intel’s Perceptual Computing team will work closely with Ascending Technologies to develop UAV technology. Ascending Technologies has developed over 1,000 high-tech flight solutions.

"We plan for the Ascending Technologies team to continue supporting their current customers while also collaborating with Intel’s Perceptual Computing team to develop UAV technology that can help drones fly with more awareness of their environments."
In 2015, Intel Capital invested in Ascending Technologies and merged the company’s sense-and-avoid algorithms with Intel RealSense technology’s real-time depth-sensing capability. These combined technologies will be used to improve drone safety and focus on other related issues.
In August, Intel invested $60m in Chinese drone maker Yuneec.
