Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar has celebrated the initial operations of a new cooling solution installed by Siemens as part of its growth and sustainability plans.
The district cooling infrastructure consists of five cooling plants around the airport that now all use the Siemens Deman Flow technology to reduce energy costs and improve efficiency.

Installation of the technology is part of the airport’s ambition of improving its carbon efficiency by 30% by 2030, in line with Qatar’s National Vision on climate change.
Hakan Ozdemir, CEO of Siemens in Qatar, said: “Our smart infrastructure solutions aim to enhance energy efficiency, ensuring real cost savings and environmental advantages.
“This partnership set a benchmark in energy efficiency, showcasing the pivotal role of innovative technologies and strategic partnerships in realizing Qatar’s sustainability goals.”
According to Hamad International, Siemens’ technology has already helped it reduce its CO2 emissions by more than 5,000 metric tons since it was installed in November 2023, and will soon see an annual saving of 16,000 tons as well as a 23% reduction of energy consumption and costs.

By GlobalDataDemand Flow is a HVAC optimisation solution that “provides a holistic approach” to improve chilled water and air distribution systems by addressing some of the main issues with traditional systems, including static pressure and chilled water flow bypass.
Hamad International, which opened in 2014, has pushed itself as a sustainability leader in the aviation industry, despite the Middle East’s poor reputation on fossil fuels and climate change.
Last year, the airport became one of two to work on a pilot project by Airports Council International World creating an ESG framework to support the industry as it seeks to deliver on net zero goals.
Michael McMillan, senior vice president of facilities management at Hamad, said the airport “needs to be the best airport for the world by growing responsibly”.
He said: “This collaboration with Siemens strongly aligns with our environmental sustainability goals by adopting innovative solutions and our commitment to investing in the latest technology that will reduce our environmental footprint.”
