The new agreement follows on from a previous memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in 2014 and a LoI signed last year, both of which aimed to develop mutual areas of interest for the two parties, especially in the field of air traffic control (ATC).

The latest LoI covers some of the ATC requirements necessary before the 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo, Japan, including planning for the Tokyo terminal manoeuvring area (TMA).

“Like the UK, Japan is surrounded by sea and therefore heavily dependent on civil aviation as an essential means of transport."

NATS chief executive officer Martin Rolfe said: “NATS is delighted to continue this close and rewarding relationship and work with the JANS as they prepare for the 2020 Olympics.

“It is also a time when there is extensive development and expansion of key airports in order to deal with increased demand for air services and so we look forward to sharing and exchanging best practices, skills and tools to support this growing aviation industry.”

The new LoI was signed by Martin Rolfe and JANS director general Kimiharu Banno at the World ATM Congress held in Madrid, Spain, in 2017.
