Fuel licensor Lummus Technology has announced that its ethanol-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) process technology is now commercially available and offers a “safe” and “reliable” solution.

According to Lummus, the ethanol-to-SAF process works by combining ethanol to ethylene, olefin oligomerisation and hydrogenation technologies in a process design that maximises SAF production while decreasing carbon emissions.

This announcement is strengthened by the partnership between Lummus and Braskem in 2022, which was set to license worldwide technology to produce green ethylene.

Braskem’s ethanol dehydration facility in Brazil, which uses EtE EverGreenTM technology, offers a foundation for producing 260 kilotons of ethylene from ethanol each year, which as stated by Lummus is “key” in this announcement.

Lummus Technology president and CEO Leon de Bruyn emphasised how the company’s expertise will help customers produce sustainable fuels: “Lummus’ extensive commercial experience in all steps, including conversion of ethanol feedstock and production of the SAF process, gives us a unique advantage to help our customers produce sustainable fuels.

“Our process leverages proven, commercial-scale technologies that we integrate to meet the aviation industry’s growing demand for SAF and support its decarbonisation efforts.”

Chevron Lummus Global, which has integrated this dehydration method with its light olefins oligomerisation and advanced hydroprocessing technology, is another venture that supports this development.

Established in 1907, Lummus Technology features a portfolio of over 4,100 patents, over 150 new technologies and over 2,500 licensed units.
