Airport ground service provider Swissport International has signed a five-year agreement to implement Honeywell’s GoDirect Ground solution across worldwide operations.
Developed in collaboration with telematics firm Pinnacle, the GoDirect Ground solution will allow Swissport to connect the ramps it uses at airports. It provides real-time information about vehicles engaged in aircraft loading and unloading, baggage sorting, as well as passenger and crew transportation.
This connected ramp through a combination of connectivity and telematics, allows vehicles at airports to transfer data, which can be fed into the GoDirect Ground software.
Collected data enables users to track the use of vehicles and change or improve services in order to achieve faster turnaround times, employ effective maintenance processes and make better use of fuel.
Swissport International Global Fleet vice-president David Burgess said: “Connected and software-driven technology is set to have a profound impact on the evolution of ground-handling, and we’re working with Honeywell to move the industry forward with the creation of the connected ramp.
“With more accessible data we can create a safer and more efficient ramp environment, drive better on-time performance and lower fuel and maintenance costs.

By GlobalData“Additionally, telematics will help us ‘right size’ our vast ground-support fleet through more efficient allocation and utilisation, thereby reducing congestion and saving on long-term capital expenditure.”
The decision to deploy the solution comes after its demonstration at five of Swissport’s ground handling stations earlier 2018.
Subsequently, Swissport found that the GoDirect Ground solution will help slash around 13% repair and maintenance costs. It has been designed to gain better insights into the driver behaviour and identification of the most commonly driven pathways at airports.
Swissport will deploy the technology across its global operation that covers more than 50 countries and 318 airports worldwide.
