New Make-Up Carousel to be Installed at Manchester Airport by Vanderlande Industries UK

The UK subsidiary of Vanderlande, the world’s leading baggage handling system supplier, has been awarded a contract that will see installation of a new tailored make-up carousel that will enhance the baggage handling system at Manchester Airport’s Terminal 1.

This follows the recent successful completion by Vanderlande of a baggage handling improvement project at Norwich International Airport and highlights the company’s ability to provide bespoke baggage handling systems to airports of all sizes.

Using its extensive experience in the design and consultancy phase of such projects, Vanderlande was able to submit a detailed proposal and various options to Manchester Airport. The result is the installation of a 3D baggage make-up carousel that does not encroach on crucial operational space.

While existing pushers will be reused, work will include the replacement of old chutes by a new make-up carousel to provide significant increase in buffer capacity, due to the carousel’s length. Another benefit is easier manual handling of bags, thanks to the carousel’s ergonomic height.

The project will begin in October 2014 with the aim of completing the work by the beginning of December. Vanderlande will be working in partnership with Newfield Automation, the preferred supplier to Manchester Airport Terminal 1, to update the controls of the make-up carousel.

Upon successful delivery of the make-up carousel, a further two carousels are anticipated to be installed before Easter 2015.

Commenting on the appointment of Vanderlande to handle the carousel project, Manchester Airport project manager Kevin Seagrave says: "Vanderlande was able to produce a design on budget that met our specific needs of a make-up carousel requiring minimal space, so that operational area is not compromised. It is also important to us that Vanderlande is able to install the new carousel in a short time with minimal disruption to operations."

Vanderlande Industries UK director and general manager Nick Porter said: "The challenge for us at Manchester Airport is to implement this project with the minimum disturbance, especially as it is a pure ‘brownfield’ installation in a dense baggage make-up facility.

"This project and our success at Norwich International Airport prove how we can contribute to the overall improvement of the operation and passenger experience at airports of all sizes."
