Typhoon Lan is forecast to make landfall in central Japan on Tuesday, and airlines and train providers have cancelled services in the region as a precaution.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) Typhoon Lan is forecast to make landfall with gusts of up to 95mph (150 km/h).

Typhoon Lan is making its way over the Pacific Ocean and is scheduled to make landfall in the early hours of 15 August near the border between Mie and Wakayama. It is then expected to head north, to the population and transport hubs Osaka and Nagoya.

As reported by Reuters, many flights on the storm’s route were cancelled by Japan Airlines (JAL) and Ana.

ANA has stated on its official website: “International flight operations will not be affected by Typhoon Lan. However, this situation is subject to change depending on the route of the typhoon. If your ANA-operated flight is expected to be delayed or cancelled due to [the] typhoon, you are eligible to choose an alternative flight to your destination or refund your ticket with no cancellation fee, whether or not your flight is delayed or cancelled.”

JAL, the Japanese flag carrier, had cancelled 19 domestic flights for Monday owing to the storm.

JAL released a statement on its website stating: “Due to the impact of the typhoon, there is a possibility that many flights will be delayed or cancelled due to the expected impact on flights to and from Japan.”

The cyclone is set to affect one of Japan’s biggest travel seasons, the Obon summer holiday, an annual Japanese traditional period for vacation and seeing family.
