German airport operator Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg has announced that 51,979 passengers travelled through Berlin’s Schönefeld and Tegel Airports last month.
It noted that the passenger numbers showed some signs of recovery after the drastic decrease in traffic since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out.

Passenger numbers in May doubled compared to April, but they only accounted to 1.6% of the passenger traffic in May last year.
Tegel Airport saw a decrease of 98.1% compared to the same month last year with 40,808 passengers, while Schönefeld Airport saw a decrease of 98.9% with 11,171 passengers.
Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg CEO Engelbert Luetke Daldrup said: “May was another lost month for the airport company. Air traffic is slowly picking up again after weeks of standstill, but it will not reach two to four percent of the previous year’s figures until the end of the month.
“We expect air traffic to gradually increase over the next few weeks. We are well prepared at both airports to safely handle the increasing number of flights while maintaining the applicable distancing and hygiene rules”.

By GlobalDataIn the first five months of 2020, total passenger numbers in Berlin’s airports decreased by 60.2% compared to same period last year.
Both airports served a combined total of 5,646,797 passengers from January to May.
The total flight movements last month totalled 2,083, a decline of 92% compared to the same period last year.
Tegel Airport saw a decrease of 94.6% while Schönefeld recorded an 86.8% decrease in flight movements.
The total cargo handled in the two airports was 961t, a decrease of 68.9% compared to May 2019.
Fraport announced that 188,078 passengers travelled through Frankfurt Airport in April, marking a decline of 96.9% compared to the same month last year.
