The facility has been equipped with a new exterior façade that enables natural light to illuminate the passenger drop-off area.

Under the project, two glass pedestrian bridges above the passenger drop-off area have also been modernised, which offer passengers with mobile airline tickets to skip ticket lines and move towards boarding to their flights.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said: “A state-of-the-art airport is vital to regional economic growth and the new Syracuse Hancock International Airport will help usher in a bright future for Central New York.

“The airport builds on the momentum we have already established in the region and will help us attract tourists and businesses from around the world.”

In addition, a Taste NY grab-and-go kiosk has been installed to promote New York’s food and beverage producers.

In order to sustain the extreme weather conditions, the airport’s exterior has been fitted with perforated steel panels. Energy efficient windows and a new rainwater collection system have also been installed.

Furthermore, the airport has been equipped with energy efficient lighting, solar arrays and a cold weather green roof canopy to promote eco-friendly practices.

Senator David Valesky said: “The modernisation of Hancock International Airport will enhance the passenger experience and bring the facility in line with other state-of-the-art transportation hubs.”

The project received $35.8m from the state, $14.9m from the federal government, while another $11.7m was offered by the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority and Onondaga County.

Modernisation of Syracuse Hancock Airport was carried out as part of Cuomo’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization programme.
