Global architectural firm Aedas has won the design and construction contract for Yantai Penglai International Airport’s new Terminal 2 in China.

Aedas will serve as the lead design architect as part of an international team that includes China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute (CSWADI) and the New Era Airport Design Institute.

With the construction of the new terminal, the airport will be able to accommodate the increasing number of passengers generated by the growing Yantai and Shandong economies.

The proposed facility, which will cover an area of 167,000m², is being built as part of the airport’s Phase II expansion plan.

“It will be developed in such a way that it could be further expanded to more than 200,000m² by 2040.”

Located to the south of the existing Terminal 1 (T1) facility, the new Terminal 2 is scheduled to become operational by 2021.

Aedas noted that the terminal’s sweeping roof form has been inspired by the Yantai’s Kunyu Mountain.

The roof of the new terminal building will be designed with skylights to bring natural light into the check-in as well as processing halls.

Yantai Airport serves the city of Yantai in Shandong Province, China. It is located 43km from the city centre, near the town of Chaoshui in Penglai.
