Air navigation service provider NATS has secured a contract from London Luton Airport (LLA) to continue offering its air traffic management and engineering services.

Under the agreement, NATS’s team of controllers will continue to offer its services starting November this year until 2023, with the option to extend that for another two years.

NATS won the contract after an open and competitive tender process.

London Luton Airport operations director Neil Thompson said: “Demand for air travel is at record levels and shows no sign of slowing.

“Working with expert partners is an important part of that mission so, after a competitive process, we are delighted to appoint NATS as our air traffic provider for the next five years.”

Additionally, the airport received NATS’ support through its ongoing £150m redevelopment and expansion programme. It helped the airport to double passenger growth over the last three years to hit a record 15.8 million last year.

Air traffic controllers in the tower will be responsible for the safe take-off, landing and taxiing of aircraft around the airfield.

Furthermore, the onsite engineering team of NATS will look after critical ATC systems that are important for the safe and efficient running of the operation.

Last year, NATS’ air traffic controllers at LLA managed 135,528 flights, growing 3.1% from 2016.
