The Governor of Hawaii, Neil Abercrombie, has released over $335m to upgrade local airports in the state under various capital improvement projects (CIP).
The projects are aimed at offering a better travel experience for Hawaii’s residents and visitors in order to boost the region’s economy.

As part of the funding, $305m will be allocated for the construction of a multi-level consolidated car-rental facility and for improvements on the roadway at the Kahului Airport, Maui.
The car-rental facility will include a customer service building, quick turnaround, ready and return vehicle parking spaces, and four 15,000-gallon fuel storage tanks.
The project will also establish a people-mover system to and from the terminal, roadway connections to airport terminal roadways, additional employee parking spaces and non-reflective photovoltaic panels.
The car rental, which will have access to the airport through a new road from Hana Highway to Airport Loop Road, will reduce traffic congestion.

Over $14.46m will be used for upgrading the second level roadway at the overseas terminal at the Honolulu International Airport, Oahu.
This includes the repair of the concrete roadway, replacement of current expansion joints, drainage system repairs, roadway lighting system repairs, hazardous material abatement and demolition of existing planter boxes.
About $11.79m will be allocated for the construction of an additional 28,000ft² of concession space for the Ewa Concourse at Honolulu International.
It covers the demolition and/or renovation of existing restrooms and the enclosure of the exterior sidewalk by relocating the existing curtain wall to the Wiki-Wiki shuttle roadway, including necessary interior improvements.
The improvements will allow the state Department of Transportation to maximise potential sales revenue, and improve the passenger experience by bringing the concessions closer to the gates.
Hilo International Airport on Hawaii Island will receive $3m for the development of a new aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) station. This will replace the current facility, which does not comply with Federal Aviation Administration standards.
The current ARFF building will be used for storage following the completion of the new building.
