Southwest Airlines has announced the availability of mobile boarding passes for customers travelling throughout the US.

Southwest Airlines’ new mobile boarding pass enables customers to use their portable devices to pass through security checkpoints, making the check-in process faster and more environmentally friendly.

Southwest Airlines chief marketing officer Kevin Krone said that mobile boarding passes are a great tool to help customers board their flights quickly.

"This was a high priority for Southwest and it is just one of the many ways we are improving the overall customer experience," Krone said.

In order to introduce the new technology, Southwest Airlines began initial tests in late 2013, which were followed by successful pilot programmes in Houston and Dallas.

Earlier in May, the airline unveiled an update to its iOS and Android apps, which adds information about upcoming trips to the homepage.

The update allows customers to quickly view important information while travelling, such as flight status, boarding position, and gate information.

Travel information on the app will be updated at least 24 hours prior to a flight, so customers can check-in and access their mobile boarding pass from the homepage.

Southwest Airlines serves 96 destinations in 41 states, in addition to five near-international countries via its wholly-owned subsidiary, AirTran Airways.
