The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has opened a new application centre for its Pre-Check programme at the Tampa International Airport, which allows selected passengers to swiftly pass through security checkpoints .

The service allows travellers to leave on belts, shoes and light outerwear and permits them to keep laptops in their cases, as well as approved liquids or gels in hand luggage.

The programme allows US citizens and any lawfully permanent residents to go through a pre-enrolment process online.

"The programme is enabling us to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach to transportation security."

To be qualified for pre-check, passengers have to pay an enrolment fee of $85 and visit an application centre to provide biographic information, fingerprints and valid required identity, as well as citizenship or immigration documentation.

TSA administrator John Pistole said: "This new application process will greatly increase the availability of the Pre-Check’s benefits to a broader population of travellers nationwide.

"Pre-Check is enabling us to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach to transportation security, as we look for more opportunities to provide the most effective security in the most efficient way."
