The Nasa Aeronautics Research Institute (NARI) has awarded Saab a new cooperative agreement to develop new methods to optimise flight efficiency.

As part of the deal, the company will prototype and test a new tool for air traffic optimisation across multiple phases with more efficient 4D trajectory solutions.

"Researchers are developing and testing complex efficiency solutions without being able to accurately see the impact on multiple phases in real time."

The research project is expected to support the aviation industry in developing new future applications for the next-generation (NextGen) air transportation system.

Saab ATM general manager Ken Kaminski said: "In many cases, researchers are developing and testing complex efficiency solutions that focus on one phase of flight, such as the surface, without being able to accurately see the impact on multiple phases in real time.

"We are taking a new approach by integrating two different techniques to determine their ability to paint a more accurate, holistic picture of the effect of new operational procedures on the entire flight path."

Under the project, Saab and its partner NextGen Aerosciences (NGA) will apply the latter’s continuous re-planning engine and probabilistic graphical models, which are two separate techniques to address optimal 4D flight across multiple flight operation phases.
