Chopin Airport in Warsaw, Poland, has completed the construction of a new apron to effectively manage the increase in cargo traffic.

The new apron has been built in the southern area of the airport, which is located next to the old cargo apron. It can accommodate up to three code F aircraft and six code C planes like Boeing 737 or Airbus A320.

This year, more than 27,000t of cargo passed through the airport, marking an 18.4% increase.

Cargo volumes for both domestic and international flight increased substantially with 308t to 354t for domestic flights and 22,700 to 26,900 for international flights.

Airport director Michal Kaczmarzyk said: "The investment project is our answer to the increasing demand for freighter handling facilities at Chopin Airport. Our cargo traffic is growing dramatically and we need more new parking spaces for cargo jets."

The airport also recorded a rise in the quantity of mail handled, with a total growth of 1.3% in the first half of the current year. For international flights, there was an increase of roughly 12.8%.
