Known as Project Jewel, the expansion plan will involve the construction of a glass and steel dome-shaped space that will feature airport operations, indoor gardens and retail stores, as well as offer hotel facilities.

"We must take deliberate steps to enhance Changi’s attractiveness as a stopover point."

It will also feature an indoor waterfall that will pour from the roof of the dome.

The responsibility of designing the airport has been given to Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie, who is best known for designing Singapore’s Marina Bay Sand Hotel.

Changi Airport Group CEO Lee Seow Hiang said: "We are confident that Project Jewel will be a world-class attraction that Singaporeans will not only enjoy immensely but be proud of."
