Indonesian operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) has started expansion work on Husein Sastranegara International Airport, which will enable it to increase its annual passenger capacity from 750,000 to 3.4 million.

To manage the growing number of passenger traffic, the plan will include the expansion of existing terminal building from 5,000 to 17,000m². A 2,500m² commercial area will also be developed, which will help in boosting revenues.

"The passenger traffic passing through the airport stood at 2.46 million throughout 2013, which means we are operating at overcapacity."

The Jakarta Post quoted AP II president director Tri S Sunoko as saying: "We want to make Husein Sastranegara Airport an icon in Bandung, as well as improve our services to passengers. The passenger traffic passing through the airport stood at 2.46 million throughout 2013, which means we are operating at overcapacity."

The airport also said that they were expecting the number of air travellers flying from and to the airport to reach 3.08 million by the end of the current year.

Airport general manager Yayan Hendrayani said that besides national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and the country’s largest low-cost carrier, Lion Air, Citilink, AirAsia Indonesia, Express Air, Wings Air, Susi Air and Tiger Air were flying to Bandung, connecting the city with major cities in Indonesia and ASEAN.

The expansion work is expected to be completed by 2015. Approximately IDR139bn ($11.39m) will be invested in the project.
