Singapore’s Changi Airport has broken ground on its ambitious Project Jewel, which is a mixed-use complex featuring attractions, retail units, a hotel and facilities for airport operations.

The complex will be built in front of Terminal 1 and is a joint venture between the Changi Airport Group (CAG) and CapitaMalls Asia, CapitaLand’s shopping mall division.

The airport will also be carrying out the expansion work for T1 simultaneously with the construction of the Jewel complex.

Covering a total gross floor area of about 134,000m², Project Jewel will involve the construction of a glass and steel dome-shaped space that will feature airport operations, indoor gardens and retail stores, along with hotel facilities. It will also feature an indoor waterfall that will pour from the roof of the dome.

The construction of Jewel and the expansion of T1 will be undertaken by a construction joint venture formed by Woh Hup and Obayashi Singapore.

CAG CEO and chairman of Jewel Changi Airport said: "An important hallmark of Changi Airport’s growth over the past 30-odd years has been continual change and innovation.

"In charting the airport’s future, this spirit continues to underpin our strategy. Faced with intensifying competition, we challenged ourselves to rethink what an airport can be, not just as a gateway for flights, but as a tourism destination on its own.

"Today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks only the beginning of this exciting journey. Over the next few years, we will work hard with our designers and contractors to execute our vision and realise our aspirations for Jewel. We look forward to presenting, in four years time, an iconic, world-class destination that both Singaporeans and our passengers from all over the world will enjoy, bringing Changi Airport to its next level of growth."

Slated for completion by end of 2018, the complex will have five storeys above ground and five basement storeys.
