Air India has sold four Boeing 747 400’s to broker and leasing firm AerSale, according to The Economic Times in Delhi. 

The four jets were marketed and sold via UK-based Skytech-AIC.

According to flight tracker data, the jets have not operated commercially for the airline since 2021. The sale brings to an end a long-running marketing campaign by the Indian flag carrier to offload the planes.  

The planes are all more than 25 years old according to Skytech-AIC records available online, which the company confirmed to Airport Technolgy related to the Air India units. 

The details, below, confirmed the manufacturer’s serial number of the planes along with the Pratt & Whitney engines fitted to the planes.  

  • 747-400 / 1993  –  27165 (MSN) – PW4056-3 
  • 747-400 / 1994  –  27214 (MSN) – PW4056-3  
  • 747-400 / 1996  –  28094 (MSN) – PW4056-3 
  • 747-400 / 1996  –  28095 (MSN) – PW4056-3 

It is understood the aircraft are all currently held in Mumbai, and will be transported to the US. Two of the jets are expected to be refitted as cargo planes, while the older two will be broken up for parts.
