Germany’s flag carrier Lufthansa has made its first order from US aviation giant Boeing in 30 years, with 100 737 MAX units to bring Boeing aircraft back into its fleet.

Of the units, 40 Boeing 737-8 are firm orders, with an option on 60 further craft.

Lufthansa said it launched the Boeing 737 in 1967 with a delivery of 146 737s, running the fleet until its final delivery of a 737-300 in 1995. The airline retired its last 737 in 2016, before now refreshing its Boeing units.

“Around 60 years ago, Lufthansa was a co-developer and launch customer of this globally successful model. With the new modern, quiet, economical and efficient 737-8 aircraft, we are making progress both in modernising our short-haul and medium-haul fleet and in achieving our carbon CO₂ reduction targets,” said Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr.

The German carrier has several Boeing aeroplanes on its current order books, including 34 Dreamliners and at least seven freight carriers.

“Our relationship with the Lufthansa Group has led to a number of industry-changing achievements and we are delighted to see the 737 return to an original launch customer’s fleet,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
