Dutch airport management company Royal Schiphol Group has teamed up with security technology provider Pangiam to accelerate the hand baggage screening process at Schiphol and other airports.

Powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithms, Pangiam’s technology is said to help passengers pass through security checks swiftly while ensuring safety.

The technology is designed to analyse images of hand baggage as well as detect banned items and other security threats.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Security director Philip van Noort said: “We are fully committed to recruiting security colleagues and have been increasing the productivity of our security equipment recently, of course without compromising on the quality of security.

“In the future, this collaboration can contribute to more comfort for travellers thanks to secure and faster hand baggage screening. Safety always remains our priority.”

Schiphol is the first airport in Europe to support Project DARTMOUTH, which is an alliance between Pangiam and Google Cloud.

The technology can be incorporated into existing hardware and equipment, such as its CT scans, as well as can be used in combination with other software.

Currently, trials of the technology are underway at the airport on a small scale. Schiphol intends to implement it on a large scale if it conforms to all the parameters and European laws.

The partnership between Pangiam and Schiphol is part of a broader initiative, which aims to expedite the innovation and development of in-house and partner technology solutions.

Pangiam Project DARTMOUTH head Alexis Long said: “Royal Schiphol Group has an international reputation for innovation and excellence in technology. This collaboration allows us to bring the benefits of artificial intelligence to the security checkpoint and improve the process.”

In June 2022, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced a trial of Pangiam’s AI-based screening technology, as part of Project DARTMOUTH.
