Schiphol and LVNL add more measures to reduce noise nuisance

Schiphol and Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) have introduced 16 additional measures to the multi-annual programme to cut down noise nuisance.

Schiphol and Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) have introduced 16 additional measures to the multi-annual programme to cut down noise nuisance.

The additions were made after collecting input from the residents, municipalities, provincial officials, councils and social organisations.

The revised programme, which now consists of 44 measures, has been presented to the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Cora van Nieuwenhuizen.

The updated programme includes using new technology for aircraft to turn more precisely, along with research on the optimisation of numerous current take-off routes to relieve residential areas and enhance runway maintenance and work schedules.

In March 2020, Schiphol and LVNL developed the Minder hinder Schiphol programme, submitted based on recommendations from residents, Schiphol Local Community Council officials and other stakeholders.

Royal Schiphol Group president and CEO Dick Benschop said: “Nuisance reduction is a structural issue and very important, regardless of the fact that air traffic is currently limited. With this programme, we want to work on reducing nuisance in a transparent manner together with the local community. We are grateful to residents, municipalities, provinces and organisations for their critical comments, compliments and suggestions to make the programme better.”

LVNL CEO Michiel van Dorst added: “We are pleased that so many people in Schiphol’s local community, officials and social organisations have helped us to consider ways to reduce nuisance and have come up with suggestions. In close consultation and collaboration with the community, we are investigating and developing proposals to limit noise and emissions, while continuing to guarantee safety. In this way, LVNL creates value for people living in the vicinity of Schiphol.”

Some of the measures introduced last year include diverted take-off route from the Kaagbaan over Bodegraven, a higher-approach course towards the Polderbaan Runway at night, a new standard night-time approach route towards the Zwanenburgbaan Runway, and higher flight path for helicopters over the A9 motorway at night.

The companies stated that they will be carrying out more in-depth research and continue to work on the programme in the foreseeable future.
