Xtralis is to install its VESDA VLS aspirating smoke detectors at the new Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building (MTB), which is due to open in 2017.

Scheduled to open in 2017, the MTB will be the largest in Abu Dhabi.

The new Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) will feature 700,000m² of internal space for a passenger terminal (MTB), cargo facility, restaurant and retail space.

Every hour, the MTC would be able to accommodate 8,500 passengers and up to 30 million passengers annually.

The MTC’s central space will be as large as three full-sized football pitches and will have a ceiling that is 52m-high, making it taller than the Emirates Palace. Around 28,000m² of this space will dedicated for retail outlets and restaurants.

Airport authorities chose Xtralis as its VESDA has early and reliable detection capabilities, in addition to VLS capability of monitoring the protected space by sectors.

Moreover, as temperatures in the terminal could go from hot to cold based on the weather, VESDA was found to be reliable in detecting in these conditions.

A major challenge with protecting the MTB is the large open space where smoke could get be diluted, due to compounded by air-conditioning systems.

The VESDA LaserScanner (VLS) is akin to the VESDA LaserPlus (VLP) detector, but comes with a valve mechanism in the inlet manifold and software to control the airflow from the four sectors.

Due to this configuration, a single zone can be divided into four sectors.

"VLS can perform a fast scan of each pipe to detect smoke."

The VLS draws air from all sectors in use and if the smoke level is found to touch the adaptive scan threshold, the VLS can perform a fast scan of each pipe to detect the smoke.

More than one pipe is transporting smoke just in case, then the sector with the highest smoke concentration would be scanned first.

Once fast scan is completed and the sector with the highest smoke concentration is identified, the VLS will closely monitor all four sectors (pipes) to detect fire growth and subsequently maintain full protection of the area.

There are four alarm levels (alert, action, fire 1 and fire 2) for each sector (pipe) and the sensitivity for each alarm level can be set to ensure the optimum alarm thresholds are applied for each sector.

Xtralis provides a complete safety and security solutions for airports, which includes smoke and gas detection, perimeter security, and intrusion detection systems.

Xtralis VESDA & VESDA-E aspirating smoke detectors (ASD) are installed in other important buildings of UAE, such as the Burj Khalifa, Emirates Palace Hotel, and Dubai Airport.
