Introduction
What we’ve seen during the research for the 2023 Airport Technology Excellence Awards is an increased focus by companies on two key themes, decarbonization, and the incorporation of new technology such as AI and autonomous tech.
In such a carbon intensive industry, the move to reduce emissions and improve sustainability was always going to be a difficult challenge, but as the requirement to decarbonize becomes unavoidable we have seen a number of companies step up to the plate with potential solutions.
Alongside the increasingly common practice of setting challenging emissions targets and incorporating general sustainability measures, we have also seen companies embracing new technology solutions particularly in regard to propulsion for planes themselves. A wide variety of companies are investing in technology such as hydrogen and other sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in an attempt to wean themselves off oil, and we have also seen a proliferation of startups looking at the possibilities of electric flight.
When it comes to SAF the challenge is not only the creation of the fuels themselves but also establishing the infrastructure to supply them and we have also seen a raft of investments into infrastructure by airlines and airports.
For electric vehicles the same is true, with investment in the technology, mainly eVTOLs, matched by investment in charging infrastructure, supplies of renewable energy, and the infrastructure needed for launch including vertiports and updated air traffic control systems.
In addition to environmentally focused tech solutions, both airports and airlines are increasingly looking towards the possibilities provided by AI and autonomous technology. This can be anything from autonomous vehicles and systems, through to advances in security and screening equipment and biometrics.
While key environmental and tech investment grabs the headlines, it is also noteworthy that airports and airlines are still investing in the core areas of their business, including the expansion and upgrading of airport infrastructure.
While environmental challenges and the shockwaves of COVID hit the industry hard, the level of investment seen suggests that plenty are still optimistic about the future of aviation as a key part of the global travel industry.
We hope our Excellence Awards Report not only provides recognition to those companies at the cutting edge of the industry but also provides a useful snapshot of the industry’s current state.
Congratulations to all our winners.
