CLEAR, a biometric data company, has introduced its touchless security screening technology at Chicago’s Midway International Airport (MDW) in the US.

To confirm identity prior to air travel, CLEAR uses an individual’s unique biometrics such as eyes, thereby replacing the need to use traditional identification documents.

Given the recent increase in coronavirus cases in Chicago, this touchless experience through airport security will help passengers to travel with reduced health risks.

Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Jamie L Rhee said: “I want to thank CLEAR for investing in traveller convenience, security and peace of mind, especially in these unusual times.

“I also applaud CLEAR for their commitment to developing a diverse workforce that looks like Chicago since launching at O’Hare last year. We are looking forward to continued partnership at both airports.”

CLEAR chairman and CEO Caryn Seidman-Becker said: “CLEAR’s identity technology is touchless, safe and secure. This additional layer of security provides our members with greater peace of mind as we continue to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic.”

Travellers can start the enrolment process online and complete it with the help of a CLEAR Ambassador at a CLEAR pod in the airport. After the enrolment, members can use CLEAR at more than 55 major airports and venues across the US. CLEAR is an opt-in membership service.

CLEAR identification technology, which has been tested and certified by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), relies upon double-encrypted biometric data.

With the cost of $15 a month, the CLEAR membership is billed annually. Discounts are available for select rewards programmes, including for United Airlines, Delta Airlines and American Express customers.

Family Plans are also available for an additional $50 per adult per year, whereas children under 18 can join for free.
