APT Pranoto Airport in Indonesia has selected Total Solar Distributed Generation (DG) to provide solar-powered rooftops.

Following this move, the airport will become the first in the country to use solar panels for sustainability.

Under the contract, the company will provide a 600 kilowatts-peak (kWp) system capable of generating 755MWh of renewable electricity annually.

This is expected to supply nearly 20% of the airport’s power.

The project will involve the installation of approximately 1,800 solar panels. This is said to lower the airport’s yearly carbon footprint by 821t.

With the Indonesian Government planning to move its capital to Kutai in East Kalimantan, APT Pranoto Airport is said to become a major airport in the country.

Total Solar DG South East Asia CEO Gavin Adda said: “Total Solar DG is proud to be able to support the government in their sustainability commitments and especially on this prestigious project to relocate the capital city. This project will drive down costs and carbon footprint in a safe and sustainable way.”

APT Pranoto Airport head Dodi Cahyadi added: “We are very proud to be able to lead the way towards this programme and sincerely hope this project will add a positive contribution to the country and it may serve as an example for other airports.”

In July, Indonesia began plans to build a second airport in Bali to boost the country’s tourism.

According to 9News, the airport will be constructed in the northern village of Kubutambahan, on the opposite side of the island to tourist hotspots such as Kuta and Seminyak.
