Heart Aerospace, the Swedish company specialising in electric aircraft, has unveiled plans to carry out its first fully electric experimental flight at New York’s Plattsburgh International Airport in 2025.

The Heart Experimental 1 (Heart X1), claimed to emerge as the largest fully electric aircraft to take flight, represents a key milestone in the development of the company’s ES-30 hybrid-electric regional passenger aircraft.

The ES-30, featuring an all-electric, zero-emissions range of 200km and an extended hybrid range of 400km, is designed to offer sustainability for short-haul routes.

Heart Aerospace unveiled the Heart X1 aircraft earlier this year at its facility in Gothenburg.

Currently, the Heart X1 aircraft is undergoing testing of its critical systems to guarantee a secure experimental flight in Plattsburgh.

The experimental flight is a crucial step in testing the electric propulsion technology, according to the company.

Heart Aerospace co-founder and CEO Anders Forslund said: “Electric commercial aeroplanes have the potential to lower operating costs for US airlines, creating a powerful opportunity to reestablish regional air routes that stimulate local economies, boost tourism, and enhance access to urban hubs.

“We’re impressed by the leadership shown by New York’s North Country region in the support of next generation aeroplanes.”

Plattsburgh International Airport, located in the Champlain Valley, was selected for its conducive environment for experimental flights.

The airport boasts extensive airfield infrastructure, low air traffic density, and community support for transportation technology initiatives, stated the company.

Clinton County Legislature chairman Mark Henry said: “Heart Aerospace’s decision to conduct its fully electric experimental flight from Plattsburgh International Airport reflects Clinton County’s strong commitment to advancing next-generation transportation technologies.

“Clinton County is strengthening its position as a transportation manufacturing cluster, and we are excited to be part of Heart’s journey and the growing sustainable aerospace community in upstate New York.”

Last year, Heart Aerospace announced a partnership with BAE Systems to develop the battery system for its ES-30 regional electric aircraft.
