VINCI Airports has announced the continuation of work to modernise Serbia’s Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

It stated that the work was carried out while adhering to the safety and health prevention measures during the state of emergency.

Belgrade Airport, along with its construction partner, VINCI Terna Construction JV, and their subcontractors, developed a plan to reduce the pandemic’s impact on the project and its deadlines.

Belgrade Airport CEO Francois Berisot said: ‘’We expect the major works to be executed over the next three years. These include terminal expansion, inserted runway and additional taxiways construction, additional aircraft parking positions, a new de / anti-icing pad, additional car parking spaces, as well as new access roads.

“Thanks to the planned capacity upgrades, the airport, which last year served around 6.2 million passengers, will be able to handle a projected 15 million passengers at the end of the concession period. Our aim is to significantly improve the level of service, comfort and variety of commercial offers at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport.’’

The extensive works are currently underway at many locations across the airport. The existing terminal building (Pier C) expansion is expected to boost airport capacity, functionality and comfort.

The preparatory work for new, inserted runway construction also commenced recently.

The next phases of the project will focus on eco-friendly businesses to decrease the impact on the environment.

The airport plans to construct a new power plant, which also includes a solar power plant, along with solid waste and wastewater treatment plants.

In February last year, VINCI Airports assumed the management of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.
