Raytheon Intelligence & Space (RIS) has secured a contract from the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to install checked baggage screening equipment at all federal airports in the country.

This five-year contract is valued at around $318m and involves the deployment of the equipment to nearly 430 airports.

In its previous partnership with TSA, RIS oversaw the deployment of new checked baggage screening equipment and the upgrading of the existing equipment.

This project was executed in about 155 airports in the central US region.

RIS cybersecurity, training and services vice-president John DeSimone said: “We have worked with the TSA since its inception to strengthen security at our airports.

“This nationwide expansion of our partnership allows us to continue to protect passengers from evolving security threats.”

In the last six years, Raytheon Intelligence & Space has deployed, improved or decommissioned more than 1,700 pieces of TSA security equipment.

The company has more than two decades of experience in supplying TSA with aviation-related security systems.

Meanwhile, TSA has commenced the operations of security screening at a new six-lane security checkpoint at Terminal 1 of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The new security checkpoint, which features five general screening lanes and one exclusive Automated Screening Lane, will facilitate the screening process at the terminal.

This checkpoint, located on the western end of Terminal 1, has been introduced as part of the overhaul and modernisation projects currently taking place at LAX.
