The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) in the US has installed 4,260 new solar panels at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).

The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) in the US has installed 4,260 solar panels at the Daniel K Inouye International Airport (HNL).

Supplied by Johnson Controls, the solar panels have been installed on the seventh floor of the Terminal 1 parking garage at the airport. On this floor, the 346 parking stalls have now reopened and available for public use.

The project is in line with Hawaii Governor David Ige and the State of Hawaii’s goal to use 100% renewable energy by 2045.

Installation of the new solar panels will help capture solar energy that will be used throughout the HNL.

The contract started in 2014 and is expected to generate more than $600m in cost savings over its life at Hawaii’s airports for a period of 20 years.

Additionally, the new solar canopy is set to offer shaded parking for vehicles on the seventh floor.

Customers will have access to additional parking stalls as the vehicle and pedestrian bridges from the Terminal 1 parking garage to the International parking garage will remain open.

In January, work is due to start on the fifth floor level of Terminal 2 parking garage and will involve installation of another canopy and nearly 3,000 more solar panels. These are expected to create additional sustainable energy and covered parking.

HDOT and Johnson Controls are completing more than 900 individual conservation measures at Hawaii’s airports.

Measures include replacement of nearly 98,000 light fixtures with light-emitting diode technology and energy efficient lighting, upgrading ventilation and air-conditioning systems.

They are also installing more than 24,000 solar photovoltaic panels.
