Alstef to supply new terminal baggage system at Almaty Airport

The baggage handling system will offer a throughput of 2,400 bags an hour.

French firm Alstef Group has signed a contract to deploy a baggage handling system for the new international terminal at Almaty International Airport (ALA) in Kazakhstan.

This baggage handling system will provide a throughput of 2,400 bags an hour.

The solution will comprise an outbound baggage system with 40 check-in conveyors, as well as a screening and sortation system supporting four make-up carousels.

In addition, the inbound system will feature three reclaim carousels.

With the airport’s opening scheduled for next year, the new terminal will cover over 50,000m² and have an initial passenger handling capacity of 14 million per year.

Owned and run by TAV Airports, the airport will entail an investment of $200m for doubling its current capacity.

The aim is to position the airport as one of the ‘biggest hubs in Central Asia.’

TAV Airports procurement manager Emin Sonmez said: “We chose Alstef Group because they had the most cooperative and technically qualified bid during the tender.

“The Alstef Group bid fulfilled the entire requirements of the project and they took time to understand the scope of work and to develop the existing design to make the system more practical and economical.”

Alstef and TAV Airports have been working together for more than two decades.

The partnership commenced with the deployment of the baggage handling system at Istanbul Ataturk Airport (ISL).

With an international footprint at 91 airports across 26 nations, TAV Airports offers integrated services in all areas of airport operations.

The airport management group aims to promote Kazakhstan as the business capital of the region, by increasing the connectivity of Almaty to the world.

Last month, Icelandic airport operator Isavia selected Alstef Group to upgrade the baggage handling system at Keflavik Airport (KEF) in Reykjavik.
