What is Environmental?

The Environmental category aims to highlight companies that are undertaking projects that reduce their impact on the natural environment or contribute to its general health. With the effects of climate change becoming ever more obvious, corporations have a responsibility to update and change their practices to prevent further damage being caused.

This category includes any projects that have led or will lead to a significant reduction in a company’s environmental impact and carbon footprint. This can include changes to materials and manufacturing, supply chain reviews; reduction in energy use or switches to renewables; recycling initiatives; and carbon offsetting. The category also includes projects that contribute to the environment such as tree planting schemes and river cleaning.

Themes

Several key themes dominate the Environmental Rankings in the aviation sector, all part of the green operational shift that is being seen across every industry.

Firstly there has been a notable increase in deals concerning sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This includes not only SAF supply and production, but also the construction of dedicated refuelling stations. The fact that the industry is not just playing lip service but actually investing in dedicated infrastructure shows that the green transition is here to stay.

Alongside this investment, research into new types of fuels and production continues apace as is evident from the new breakthroughs made in solar generated hydrogen technology by companies such as Swiss International Air Lines, Synhelion and ETH Zurich.

The research period has also been marked by airport authorities investing in a variety of more general facility upgrades with the expressed aim of decarbonising their operations.
