London Heathrow Airport has appointed Grimshaw Architects as the concept designer for its £16bn expansion project.

The UK-based architectural firm, which has been selected for its expertise in creating visionary concept designs, has released a fly-through animation of the proposed new design for Heathrow’s central terminal area.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and African Union Commission (AU) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop the African aviation sector and strengthen their co-operation.

The MoU will enhance the country’s economic and social development by providing safe, efficient and sustainable air transport.

Following the agreement, IATA and AU will share aviation-related information, expertise and capabilities.

The scope of the MoU includes the implementation of intelligence-driven, risk-based security measures that will reduce accident rates.

The Republic of Seychelles’ national flag carrier, Air Seychelles, has announced a major expansion to its code-share agreement with Etihad Airways, through which it will establish one-stop air connections to six cities in the US.

From 1 August, Air Seychelles will share its ‘HM’ code on transatlantic flights operated by Etihad Airways between Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC and Abu Dhabi.

Passengers can travel from Abu Dhabi on four-hour flights with Air Seychelles to Mahe, the biggest island in the archipelago. The entire journey can be combined on a single ticket with either of the airway codes, and travellers can accrue frequent flier miles on each flight.

UK-based air traffic solutions provider NATS has secured a contract to deliver air traffic control (ATC) services at George Best Belfast City Airport (BCA) in Northern Ireland.

The scope of the contract includes managing the safety and efficiency of the airport’s 42,000 annual arrivals and departures, as well as the provision of several other service enhancements, such as electronic flight progress strips.

Puerto Rico-based Seaborne Airlines and Delta Air Lines have signed a new code-share agreement to increase their travel options to and from the US and Caribbean.

Delta will extend its services to the Caribbean after the agreement, which has been filed for approval at the US Department of Transportation (DOT).

Passengers flying to and from the Caribbean will be able to access Delta’s main hubs in the US.
